Medicare Overview: Parts A, B, C, D & Medigap

Part A: Hospital Insurance

Part A helps cover inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice and some home health care. Most people don't pay a Part A premium, because they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes long enough while working.

Part B: Medical Insurance

Part B helps cover doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, lab work and medical equipment. Part B has a monthly premium. Most people pay the standard amount, which can change each year, and people with higher incomes pay more.

Part C: Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private companies approved by Medicare. They combine Part A and Part B coverage, and many include Part D drug coverage. Some plans also include extra benefits, like vision or dental. Networks, costs and benefits vary by plan.

Part D: Prescription Drug Coverage

Part D helps cover prescription drugs. Each plan has its own list of covered drugs and its own pharmacy network, and premiums and copays vary by plan.

Medigap: Medicare Supplement Insurance

Medigap policies help pay some of the costs Original Medicare doesn't, like deductibles and coinsurance. You can use Medigap with any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that accepts Medicare.

Key Eligibility & Enrollment Timelines

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

Your first chance to sign up is a 7-month window around your 65th birthday: the 3 months before, the month you turn 65, and the 3 months after. You can sign up for Parts A and B, and you can also join a Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage plan.

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)

October 15 through December 7. This is the time to review your coverage and change Medicare Advantage or Part D plans for the next year.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment (MA OEP)

January 1 through March 31. If you're in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan, or go back to Original Medicare and join a Part D plan. You can make one change during this period.

Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs)

Certain life events, like losing employer coverage or moving, may let you make changes outside the usual dates. We can help you check whether you qualify and what the timing is.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Medicare Advantage or Medigap better for me?

It depends on your doctors, prescriptions, travel and budget. Medicare Advantage plans have networks, and their premiums, copays and benefits vary by plan. With Medigap, you pay a monthly premium, the policy helps pay your share of Original Medicare costs, and you can see any provider who accepts Medicare. We can help you look at the total costs of the plans we offer for your situation.

Will I pay a penalty if I delay Part B or Part D?

Possibly. If you delay Part B or Part D without other qualifying coverage, such as coverage from a current employer, you may have to pay a late enrollment penalty. The Part B penalty lasts as long as you have Part B. Talk with us before you delay, and we can help you review your employer coverage and timing.

Can I keep my doctor?

With Original Medicare and a Medigap policy, you can see any provider in the U.S. who accepts Medicare. With a Medicare Advantage plan, you'll want to confirm that your doctors and facilities are in the plan's network. We can help you check.
